What Does Isaiah 46:4 Mean?
In Isaiah 46:4, God promises to care for His people through every stage of life, all the way to old age. Speaking through the prophet Isaiah, He contrasts Himself with the idols of Babylon, which had to be carried by the people who worshiped them (Isaiah 46:1–2). The God of Israel is the opposite: He made His people, He carries them, and He will keep sustaining and rescuing them for as long as they live.
- 01
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he”
God’s care has no end date. The One who has carried His people since birth (Isaiah 46:3) is the same God in their final years.
- 02
“I have made you and I will carry you”
Because He is our Maker, He takes responsibility for us. Idols must be carried; the living God carries His people.
- 03
“I will sustain you and I will rescue you”
A promise of daily strength and of deliverance: God holds us up when we are weak and brings us through what we cannot face alone.
